High School Admissions

The SHSAT, or Specialized High School Admissions Test, is not an easy test. Given to 8th graders who are interested in trying their luck at admissions to one of NYC's 8 public specialized high schools, the test has 114 questions to be done in 3 hours. That gives you about a minute and a half for each math question and even less time for the SHSAT English questions (if you split your time equally between the math and English sections) because you also need time to read the reading comprehension passages.

And, on top of everything, the SHSAT doesn't provide you with a math formulas sheet. That means: you have to memorize them!

How to Get into the High School of American Studies at Lehman College
The High School of American Studies (HSAS), founded in 2002, is one of the newer specialized high schools, all of which require the SHSAT (Specialized High School Admissions Test) for admission. HSAS has a special emphasis on history, and with only 400 students, is also smaller than most of the specialized high schools. HSAS provides an amazing opportunity for students to attend a small, completely free high school with a unique curriculum focus. Here’s what you need to know to apply!
