Maya is currently pursuing her bachelor's degree in Sociocultural Anthropology at Columbia University. She understands first-hand the challenges of remote learning, participating in online courses this summer at Columbia and concluding the semester with a 4.0 GPA. Some of Maya's notable accomplishments include winning the Bills.com National Essay Contest in 2018 and being named a Captain within the Ron Brown Leaders Network. Originally from Los Angeles, Maya started working in childcare at age 10. She has over 5 years of experience as a teaching assistant and tutor with students ranging in age from 5-17, including intensive one-on-one work with a 17-year-old autistic student. Particularly interested in socio-emotional support for young people, Maya has worked with several nonprofit organizations like Peer Health Exchange, teaching health education to high school freshman in the New York City public school system, and Girls on the Run, co-leading a twice-weekly program teaching girls self-confidence through team sports. She has also received training as a peer counselor/certified listener and works as a Residential Advisor (RA) at her college where she's been trained in pandemic protocol. When it comes to working with students, Maya's method centers around patience and working to create a safe environment that allows her students to feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. It is important to Maya to connect with each of her students individually in order to best tailor her teaching approach. Maya is a big superhero/action film geek and enjoys getting lost in whimsical fiction novels. She embodies this interest in fiction/adventure in her real life through her love of travel and immersing herself in the culture of unfamiliar places. She has enjoyed visiting 8 different countries, from Europe to Africa, where she loves trying unique cuisines and visiting some of the world's most beautiful places.

Maya is a big fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and once watched every movie in a row over the course of 3 days.
