Louisa graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. in Political Science with a focus on Latin American politics. She studied abroad twice, in Argentina and in Cuba, where she honed her Spanish speaking skills. After college, Louisa pursued her lifelong dream of teaching elementary school at a charter school in Washington, DC, where she grew up. After teaching 3 years there, she moved to New York City to earn a master’s degree in Childhood General and Special Education from Bank Street College of Education. She trained in Teachers College Reading Workshop, Teachers College Writing Workshop, Guided Reading, TERC Investigations Math Curriculum, and Words Their Way. She also trained in teaching English Language Learners. She holds the New York Teacher Certification: Students with Disabilities (Grades 1-6). After 5 years teaching at Bronx Community Charter School, Louisa now teaches 5th grade math and science at Academy of the City Charter School in Woodside, Queens. Louisa applies the Bank Street philosophy of theme-based curriculum that unites different disciplines and offers differentiated learning strategies to her experience planning lessons for groups of students with a wide range of abilities and learning styles. Her approach to teaching focuses on getting to know each student as a learner and as an individual. Using informal observational data and more formal assessments, she creates engaging activities, tools and lesson plans that enable students to access learning material, no matter what learning challenges they have. She works with students to increase their independence and improve their work habits.

Louisa wrote a letter to Miss Manners when she was eight. She wanted to know if she needed to say, “Excuse me” when she burped silently. Miss Manners responded and published her letter in the newspaper.
